Telehealth for patients with breast cancer through the COVID-19
Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, in 2022, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer. In Brazil, 73,610 new cases are expected annually from 2023 to 2025. The surgical procedure is one of the guidelines for cancer treatment. However, there are several post-operative complications resulting from this process in which the physiotherapy intervention has a positive impact to prevent complications, reduce pain, increase physical function and improve quality of life. During the COVID-19 pandemic, world governments were forced to adopt strict social isolation rules, which led to changes in the provision of health services to reduce the number of cases of the disease. In this context, cancer patients have had their treatments suspended or postponed. Faced with these challenges, it has been necessary to adapt care practices in the treatment of breast cancer. Worldwide, teleconsultation was already an established practice in the health field, but in Brazil it was not authorized for virtual physiotherapy follow-up. As a solution for the continuity of follow-up at this time of the pandemic in Brazil, assistance needed to be modified and, to this end, telehealth was authorized by the federal government. This authorization aimed to promote a remote model of physiotherapeutic care for patients diagnosed with breast cancer, seeking an effective solution for preventing complications by providing guidance and supervision for exercises. Despite the positive results, the implementation of this new type of care has presented several challenges. This presentation will address the obstacles faced and the results obtained through the use of teleconsult in the Physiotherapy follow-up of patients with Breast Cancer in a global scenario.
