Title: Role of Nutrition & Lifestyle in Breast Cancer

Abstract

Objective : To find a current perspective on nutrition & lifestyle influence on breast cancer.
Methods & Results : A comprehensive literature review was conducted to find out different study results & suggestions for applying as naturopathy in our setting. This was very important in the background of a densely populated developing country like Bangladesh, where breast cancer remains the no.1 killer among malignant diseases of women. There is growing evidence that life style factors including diet, body weight & physical activity may be associated with higher breast cancer risk. Good nutrition is especially important if one has cancer, because both the illness and its treatments can change the way one eats . Nutrition can prevent progress of the disease supporting the patient during treatment & preventing relapse in cancer survivors. Nutrition improve quality of life & aids in treatment. A healthy dietary pattern consisting of unrefined cereals, vegetables, fruits , nuts & olive oil, sunflower or mustard oil (in our country); less consumption of saturated fat , red meat , and alcohol, is recommended. With that addition of micronutrients , phytochemicals & fibres might help not only to fight the disease but also limit drug induced side effects, enhance therapeutic efficacy & help improve overall survival. A lifestyle intervention targeting fat intake reduction in Womens’ Intervention Nutrition Study (WINR) resulted in weight loss & reduce incidence & recurrence of early stage disease. A meta analysis of observational studies supports the concept that moderate recreational physical activity lower recurrence risk. Counselling to avoid weight gain & reduction of over weight (if obese) & maintenance of moderate physical activity is rewarding.
